About Christie's Cakes:
Christie's Cakes is looking forward to many interesting and beautiful cakes in 2013. Christie's Cakes is a part-time business that I run out of my home, and as well I work full-time, so I only do a few cakes a month in order to make each cake extra special. Please do not hesistate to contact me for information or a quote. It is never too early to book a cake for your special day!
Christie's Cakes was recently featured in the Canadian blog Wedding Obsession, as part of a romantic vintage photo shoot with Anna Jones Photography of Ottawa and Charmed Events Ottawa/Toronto. Check it out here: http://www.weddingobsession.com/2012/11/22/romantic-vintage-inspired-photoshoot/
A native of Campbellton, NB, I came to Ottawa as a student in 1999. In 2009 I began working for the National Research Council in neurobiological research. I believe that science is much like baking; they both require accurate measurement and attention to detail, but cake decoration allows me to express an artistic side that is not required in science.
The baking bug hit me early when I whipped up a banana cream pie from a recipe in my first YM magazine. Unfortunately, that first pie did not turn out so well as even the dog did not find it palatable! Luckily my baking skills have improved significantly since those early days, and now my family and friends are eager to sample my latest creations.
Eventually I wanted to learn how to decorate cakes. I took courses from Wilton to get started. I fell in love with cake decorating and after completing 4 decorating courses, I decided to make it a hobby business. I continue to hone my craft, striving to learn the latest techniques in cake decorating; in May of 2010 I took a 3 day intensive course on sugar flowers with James Roselle of Elle Cakes in Los Angeles and Food Network fame. Now I am passionate about sugar flowers, which you can see on many of my cakes.
Not only should the cakes look good, but they should taste great as well. My cakes and cupcakes are made with quality ingredients. There are no commercial cake mixes used and the icings are made with butter, not shortening. All sugar flowers and sculptures are handmade and edible.
